Mr. Fred Finite

awesome guy with a questionable reputation

FRED: Hello… Anybody home?

ME: Uhmmmm… who are you and what do you want?

FRED: I’m Fred. And I’ve always been here, keeping you going.

ME: You’ve always been here?

FRED: Yup.

ME: Where?

FRED: In your head.

ME: Well, that’s not creepy at all.

FRED: You’re welcome.

ME: I didn’t thank you.

FRED: You should.

ME: For what, exactly?

FRED: Keeping you safe. Keeping you prepared. Reminding you what could go wrong. Making sure you don’t make the same mistakes twice. Or new ones, preferably.

ME: Wait…

FRED: What?

ME: You’re the one who keeps telling me I should probably rethink everything?

FRED: You’re welcome.

ME: And reminding me of that stupid thing I said twelve years ago?

FRED: Somebody has to maintain the records.

ME: And you’re the reason I can turn one unanswered text into seventeen possible catastrophes?

FRED: I prefer “scenario planning.”

ME: Oh good grief…

FRED: Again — you’re welcome.

ME: I have questions.

FRED: Excellent. I have a clipboard.

Who is this Questionable Character?

Mr. Fred Finite, if we’re being formal.

Fred is that voice in your head that has an opinion about pretty much everything.

You know the one.

Maybe don’t…
What if…?
Are you sure?
They probably think…
Remember what happened last time?
We should think about this some more.

And the ever-popular:

Let’s replay that conversation seventeen more times just in case we missed something.

Yep. That guy.

Mine happens to be named Fred.

Yours may not have a name.
Yet.

Our Freds don’t all sound the same. They don’t worry about the same things, react to the same situations, or carry the same collection of old stories.

The thing they have in common… they do tend to be remarkably dedicated little characters.

Fred remembers. Predicts. Questions. Compares. Analyzes. Rehearses. Replays. And occasionally drags something embarrassing out of the archives from 2007 just to make sure you haven’t forgotten it.

Helpful little fellow…

And here’s the thing about Fred:

He’s not the bad guy.

He’s actually been trying to help this whole time.

Sometimes he’s incredibly useful.
Sometimes he’s full of himself.
And sometimes he shows up with seventeen reasons why that thing you’re considering is an absolutely terrible idea.

Of course he has them written down.

He has a clipboard.

The interesting part isn’t getting rid of Fred.

It’s noticing when he shows up.

Because once you recognize Fred as Fred, something rather remarkable can happen.

You can hear what he has to say…
without automatically reacting and assuming he’s right.

And somewhere in that tiny bit of space between Fred having an opinion and you deciding what to do about it lives something quite powerful:

CHOICE.

That’s really where Fred’s story begins.

Where Does Fred Even Come From?

Fair question.

The answer is a little more complicated than, “I made him up.”

Fred has actually been around a lot longer than I knew his name.

And chances are, yours has too.

So where did he come from?
Why is he carrying that notebook?
And why does he have so many damn opinions?

Well…

That’s a much bigger story.
